You do realise that both the PS4 and Xbox One require installs to the hard drive for physical games, so space is now an issue for physical games.

I wonder if Allen will just stop doing indie polls after this. The term indie barely means anything anymore. Not to mention that a large majority of these games have been in other polls. Two system polls won by "indie" games too. With the top 3 in the PC poll all being indie. Although granted they left out Nier for some reason.

Speaking of which, does Cuphead beat Nier based on what we have seen?

Yep, agreed. I always thought it was weird how it was focusing on Suicune too, not some unique legendary. Why is that the only one of those three they give a whole game?

Of course Crystal is I believe the lowest selling Pokmon game, so that's what you get for breaking the trend...

Finished the game. I loved it but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I understood how the systems worked earlier than the dozens of hours it took me.

The core of this game is so damn good, but there are QoL issues that the first game didn't have and that's as irritating as it is confusing.

Man the story really goes places. Top tier writing and localisation. The battle system is amazing when you understand it. There's a ton of worthwhile content. Let's hope they patch the minor issues.

I think Nintendo went as far as to say system, not just home console.

Anyway for 2018 Bayonetta and Fire Emblem will be huge critical hits and Pokmon and Animal Crossing could be huge commercial hits if they make it out this year. They could easily continue their hot streak with the same highs.

I agree. I didn't find it too bad or too repetitive, even though I don't support the outcome.

The constant "I think Cuphead should be higher" and the attempt to skewer Nier (feat. Bradley "Turncoat" Shoemaker) despite Alex's incredible and very personal defence of it were much worse.

What I'm trying to get at here is that indie is largely an arbitrary distinction, Half-Life 2 being a good example of that. Meanwhile Journey was 100% a Sony game, it's not indie.

If your issue is short narrative experiences, I dunno, but a lot of those are not indie, and many many indie games are not those. And even then, many of those are great games, like INSIDE for instance, it's a short burst of great gameplay and story.

Lots of different types of games are good. This might be controversial.

That's a really reductive way of thinking about games. Games aren't split between AAA and indie, and the size of a game's budget and whether or not it has a major publisher attached should not be a judge of quality. Or even the contents or style of the game. Look at Hellblade, which is an indie game, or Journey, which is not.

Cuphead is winning because it's a popular game, it would beat most of the games in the PS4 poll. Hell, it's sold as well as Nier and Persona. I'm guessing we'll see Nier vs. Cuphead in the PC poll, and I would take Nier.

Of course, I'm not sure Cuphead qualifies as indie. It was funded by Microsoft.

MVP was definitely Alex. His arguments for Nier were delightful and helped me understand how I felt about that game better. More on that in the second half of this post. It also helped me realise that not only did it have the best story of the year but it also had the best story in a video game. I also felt Dan really brought it in the last day. He must have been saving his energy in the first four!

Anyway, I have more to say about their Nier discussion. I am totally on board with Alex about feeling "seen" by this game. It discusses things that not only do video games not discuss, but media does not discuss and arguably even discourages. It talks about existential issues and nihilism (ACTUAL nihilism, not what people often think nihilism is) in a way that ultimately gives a really positive and important message. This will be an incredibly important game. It would be my game of the year in a regular year that didn't have Zelda and Mario. I think every one of the top 5 are going to be really important, though as a multiplayer game I believe PUBG's will be fleeting.

Also there's a scene in which a character calls Friedrich Nietzche a moron and that's hilarious.

The sheer amount of salt I am seeing about the winner of Best Styyyyyyyle is surprising and disappointing. I was backing Persona too but it's impossible to deny Cuphead's style. It was always going to be hard fought and they explained themselves well. Seeing people slagging off Cuphead or worse, the team themselves, is disheartening to say the least.

Well I'm happy that we have people willing to fight the fight against Horizon and PUBG.

I think she's argued her points well, especially when you compare it to other people's first years. Except for that Nier Best Music diss, what the hell was that? But at the same time she has brought a lit that wouldn't be there either, like the discussion around Mario Kart. We also wouldn't get Jeff scatting.

Also I hope you're all ready for 45 minutes of arguing about what Best World means. It gets a lot better after that, thankfully.

I think her Persona comments were valid, as someone who adores that soundtrack. What Jeff said about needing the attachment for the vocals to work is true. The funny thing is 5 is the least bad and mist coherent the vocals have ever been.

Nier though, yikes.

With that said, everybody's said dumb stuff about music. Remember when they just dismissed Tropical Freeze after 30 seconds, or Jeff calling Undertale just another chiptune soundtrack, or Vinny and Brad's pure rage against Splatoon. It happens because music will always be the most subjective category in a very subjective set of deliberations.
